My Mother Didn’t Raise Me to Sell Lipstick

I grew up rich. We lived in a beautiful home on Long Island (New York) and the only thing I ever felt my parents denied me was the set of parallel bars I wanted to install in our basement! So, when I attended a Mary Kay Guest Event, although I was awed at the opportunity for women to increase their income, I had no motivation to do so myself.

My father was a 1939 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business and just like his father, there was never a question as to whether or not his children would go to college. So, in 1967, I went to Syracuse University, with a completely new wardrobe, including a brand new fur coat, and enough spending money to join all the sorority girls in whatever was on the schedule.

I always thought my mother wanted me to marry either a doctor or a lawyer, move back to the town where I grew up and raise children. Perhaps, just to show my independence, I married an artist, moved to New York City, and pursued a career, first as a graphic designer and a photographer and then as a non-profit manager. Both my siblings became doctors, one in medicine and the other in science.

Even though my first marriage failed after less than five years, I never went home. Instead, I moved several times, got and quit several jobs, and lived what some might call a commitment-free life. My mother often asked, “When are you going to settle down?”

In addition to giving me financial security, my parents also taught me to be fair and generous with others, to be charitable with my money and my time, and to appreciate the things I had been given as well as those I earned. They also taught me that the most important things in life were integrity, honesty, trust, and perseverance. And so when I was introduced to the Mary Kay business opportunity, what motivated me most was the company philosophy. In hearing her story, I was inspired by how Mary Kay put her commitment before her comfort, something that was somewhat foreign to me.

I was also moved by Mary Kay’s generosity and the way she both treated and taught others to treat people. Golden Rule Service was one of the first things I learned and I was both interested and inspired to find out more about how she had used moral and ethical principles to establish a company that had become such a success.

The first year I attended a Mary Kay Seminar, I listened in awe to several woman who had turned their lives around. I heard stories about having children as teenagers, inability to pursue education, growing up in poor homes, and even spousal abuse. I had no idea what these women had to go through to get to where they were but I was sure that without Mary Kay, their lives and the lives of their families would not have been as rewarded. That was “my hook!”

I just celebrated my three-year anniversary as a consultant and I am looking forward to many more years in this business. I know my mother, who is now 87, does not understand why I am doing this, let alone still working, even though she and my father taught me all the things I have come to love about this opportunity. In no other job I have ever had, have I respected the company as much, loved my co-workers more, been treated as well, and had as good a time.

So even though my mother did not raise me to sell lipstick, I hope she knows that what I am really doing is helping others, trying to set an example, and loving the life I live!

Fragrance Layering

The topic of this ditty is fragrance.
What do I know about that?
O.K. Ladies … Listen up.
You spritz; you rub; you pat.

Let’s start with daily showering.
You can use loofah or you can use gel?
Red Tea & Fig … Lotus & Bamboo ?
Remember … you have to wear to sell!

Now there’s body lotion
Parfum and Eau de Toilette too …
With all these wonderful flavors,
There’s one just right for you!

Spritzer, finger, cotton ball ….
So many ways to choose.
Be careful how much you apply.
Don’t smell like a bottle of booze!

Oh, here’s a tip that’s great
And will help your fragrance set.
Put your products all together
And spritz while moisturizer’s still wet.

Oh, fragrance bothers your nose?
Your skill still needs a treat.
Body Wash & Shave and Hydrating Lotion ….
Use all over – even on your feet!

By the way, don’t forget the guys.
They need fragrance too.
Gel or spray cologne ….
Layering him equals more money for you!

Holiday Sets and Limited Editions
Often have fragrance too.
Try them and make testers
‘Cause they are only in The Look when new.

What about mixing different scents?
Be careful what you do.
Match florals, exotics, musks ….
Perhaps something older with something new.

So if there’s any one thing to remember,
Take a lipstick, a hanky and a comb.
And ask someone else to smell you.
Before you leave your home!
